First Post - but not quite a Mission Statement

I had this idea to start this blog several months ago, talking to (yet another) friend who had started a blog.
I have a lot of ideas of what to do with this blog. I'd like to post threads of great discussions from my students from class; use it for tangents that strike me while I write lectures; give me a soapbox to "pimp history"; and to try like the devil to unwind from the present insanity of the 2008 presidential election. Depending on the results, this blog may be one day continued abroad, by an ex-pat (ideally from Rome, but I sure would like to stay in the good ol' USofA!).

But I take as my mantra, the text of Teddy Roosevelt's "Bull Moose" speech in 1912:
"No, my friends, what we Progressives are trying to do is enroll rich or poor, whatever their social or industrial position, to stand together for the most elementary rights of good citizenship, those elementary rights which are the foundation of good citizenship in this great Republic of ours."
And to declare, loudly and proudly, "What We [Current Progressives] Stand For," as articulated by Bernie Horn here.
We are (I hope it's not just "I am") unashamedly in favor of: Fair wages, fair markets, health security, retirement security, equal justice…for all.
